Governor Kenneth Mapp on Wednesday welcomed Admiral Annie B. Andrews along with her Navy recruiting team members to Government House on St. Thomas, as the group was in town visiting with a Eudora Kean High School student who qualified to apply for one of the Navy’s $200,000 scholarships.
During the visit, Admiral Andrews communicated with the territory’s leader that the Navy, working in conjunction with the V.I. Department of Education Commissioner-designee Dr. Sharon McCollum, wished to make available opportunities for the territory’s youth to excel.
“Education of our people is important. The U.S. Navy is about inclusion and diversity. The Navy has become high-tech and we are looking for technically advanced candidates,” Andrews said.
The governor encouraged Andrews and her team to visit each of the territory’s islands and engage its young people, all while encouraging the group to come again. “Education and opportunity is a moral responsibility to our people,” Mapp said.
The other team members visiting with Andrews included: Nathan J. King, commanding officer; Jimmie A. Holt, Jr., national chief recruiter; and Josaphat A. Satenay, U.S. Navy recruiter.
