Kamane Joseph of St. Croix was arrested on Friday and charged with second-degree assault, domestic violence for allegedly entering the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, strangling her and doing additional damage to the apartment before leaving, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson has revealed.
According to Jackson, officers responded to a call of an assault at 7:20 a.m. in the Mutual Homes apartments in Grove Place, where the victim stated Joseph had entered her apartment without permission and became upset with her when he was asked to leave.
The victim told police Joseph grabbed her by the throat and began strangling her, leaving visible marks on her neck and shoulders. The victim fought back and Joseph eventually released her, at which time he proceeded to ransack the apartment.
The perpetrator then took a set of keys belonging to a male acquaintance of the victim who was present at the time of the incident. Joseph ran out of the apartment and drove off in the man’s vehicle.
Joseph was later located by police in the area of Estate White Lady, after an all-points-bulletin was issued for the stolen vehicle.
He was apprehended in the Walter I.M. Hodge Housing Community and charged. Joseph is being held without bail pending an advise-of-rights hearing.
