The University of the Virgin Islands 35th Annual Miss Ambassadorial competition will be held on April 11 at the university’s cafetorium on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, and includes three contestants vying for the coveted title of Miss UVI Ambassador.

The three contestants are as follows:

→ Olinger Augustin, 23, is contestant number one, a sophomore majoring in communications. She was born on St. Croix and is attending UVI on the Sheen Campus. Augustin aspires to enter the world of journalism.

→ Contestant number two is Thalia George, 21, a junior majoring in secondary education. Ms. George was born on St. Croix and is attending UVI on the Sheen Campus. She aspires to be a middle school teacher.

→ The third contestant is Katherine Callwood, 26, a sophomore majoring in early childhood development. She attends UVI on the St. Thomas Campus and plans on becoming the director of her own early education school, which will serve low-income and special needs children.

On March 28, the contestants participated in a pre-pageant interview and were judged on 8 criteria: content, intellect, language usage, fluency, spontaneity, physical presentation, auditability, clarity and information.

The competition includes six segments: business wear, introduction, ambassadorial presentation, talent, evening wear, and question and answer. The contestants will be judged on the same criteria as the pre-pageant interview, and also on appearance, appropriateness, intonation, outfit design and deportment.

For the talent segment, contestants will be judged on expression, natural ability, uniqueness, cohesion, flow and impact.

The winner will serve as an ambassador for the higher learning institution, with roles such as participating in UVI’s recruitment efforts, representing the university both locally and abroad, and maintaining a highly visible role on UVI’s campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. She will also receive one full year of tuition, including room and board, and other prizes.

Separate prizes will be awarded for Most Intellectual Speaker, Best Ambassadorial Presentation, Best Performing Talent, Best Evening Wear, Miss Congeniality, Miss Popularity and Miss Photogenic.
