St. John Student Wins Spelling Bee Competition

News / Virgin Islands / April 10, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The St. John Christian Academy, participating in the St. Thomas/St. John District Primary School Spelling Bee for the first time, took home top honors on Thursday, the Department of Education announced via press release.

Sage Osiris, a 9-year-old third grader from the Academy, won first place out of a field of 17 students. Her winning word was: Hurricane.

Osiris blew past her competition with challenging words such as: yacht, salmon, diesel, lagoon, anthem, and décor. By the 10th round, she was the only one left standing to spell simple words like: hay, book, exit and trot. Osiris, who was coached by Liandra Dagou, cruised to victory.

The top six winners were:

2nd place: Noah Espejo, Antilles School, 3rd grade
3rd place: Arianna Fleming, Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School, 3rd grade
4th place: Najji Bailey, All Saints Cathedral School, 3rd grade
5th place: Victor Rogers, Gladys Abraham Elementary School, 3rd grade
6th place: Sa’akiim Arnold, E. Benjamin Oliver Elementary School, 2nd grade

The top six finishers will go on to compete in the Territorial Primary Spelling Bee.

“My congratulations go out to Miss Osiris for a great accomplishment. I am proud of all the students who participated in today’s spelling bee. They did a tremendous job and proved hard work does pay off,” said Department of Education Commissioner-designee Dr. Sharon McCollum.

The Primary Spelling Bee was coordinated by the V.I. Department of Education Office of Elementary Programs
