THOMAS – A 34-year-old Estate Hull Bay man was arrested on assault and weapons charges Wednesday in connection with a nighttime Frenchtown stabbing the day before, according to police.
Craig Abbott was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault and use of a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence after the victim identified Abbott as the man who stabbed him several times during an altercation, police said.
The victim told police that he works as an entertainer in Frenchtown and had just finished his performance about 10:15 p.m. April 14 when the man later identified as Abbott bumped into him.
Abbott called the victim a derogatory name and approached him with a knife drawn, but efforts to de-escalate the situation by communication failed, so the victim picked up a nearby bottle in order to defend himself, police said.
The Hull Bay man then rushed the victim with the knife in his hand and a struggle ensued after Abbott grabbed the victim by his dreadlocks and the two men fell to the ground fighting, according to police.
The victim said when he stood up he realized that he had been stabbed, police said.
The victim was transported to the Roy L. Schneider Regional Medical Center where he was treated for stab wounds..
Bail for Abbott was set at $100, 000 by Order of the Superior Court.
Unable to post bail, Abbott was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending an Advise of Rights Hearing.
