Body Of One Of Young’s Parents Found In Bathtub, Extradition Hearing Set For May 12

ST. THOMAS – When neighbors discovered the bodies of 73-year-old Kenneth Young and 66-year-old Jane Young, one of them was covered in blood and the other was in the bathtub, according to Police Commissioner Delroy Richards Sr.

“One of the residents had discovered an unresponsive body, the body appeared to be covered in blood. They discovered a second victim in a bathtub,” Richards said during a press conference held at Government House 4:00 p.m., on Tuesday.

The bodies of Kenneth and Jane were located by police on Monday along with the apparent murder weapon – a knife – in the Crystal Cove Resort on St. Thomas’ East End, Richards told the VI Consortium. Mikhail Young flew off island before he could be questioned by the VIPD, prompting local police to contact their Massachusetts counterparts.

Virgin Islands officials then issued a murder warrant Monday for Mikhail Brian Young, 24, of Sudbury, Massachusetts, who allegedly stabbed his parents to death Sunday while the family was on vacation in Sapphire Bay, but he isn’t expected to be extradited here until after his appearance in Massachusetts, Middlesex court on May 12. District Attorney Marian Ryan said Young has not waived extradition.

The Boston Herald reported that Young had been arrested in August 2011 on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and threatening to commit a crime. He was also arrested the year before for domestic assault.

Authorities said in court that the suspect’s parents had taken out restraining orders against him in the past. Neighbors told Fox Boston that Mikhail Young was born in Russia and was adopted by the Youngs at an early age.

In U.S. District Court in Framingham, Massachusetts Tuesday, Mikhail Young was charged with being a fugitive from justice. Sudbury police said Young has a history of mental illness and criminal convictions. They arrested him Monday on a probation violation when he returned home.

Young was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Tuesday afternoon in District Court, police said.

“This is a horrific crime where the suspect allegedly killed his own parents,” Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix said in a statement. “The Sudbury Police Department is working closely with officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and I am proud of the work of our officers to quickly apprehend this dangerous suspect. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victims during this most difficult time.”

Young was already on probation on an indecent exposure charge, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. He was also arrested in August 2011 on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and threatening to commit a crime, according to published reports.

Massachusetts authorities said Young is being held in custody pending the official receipt of homicide charges from Virgin Islands officials.

According to the U.S. Census from 2010, Sudbury, Massachusetts had a population of 17,659 people.
