Homeless Man Found Dead In Collapsed Building

News / Virgin Islands / June 26, 2015

ST. CROIX — The decomposing body of a homeless man was recovered on Thursday after the 911 emergency call center received notification of a foul odor emanating from the area of Prince and King Cross Streets, north of the Anglican Church in the town of Frederiksted, Kevin Jackson, VIPD’s public information officer has announced.

Officers responded and noticed that an abandoned building had collapsed several days before, and that the odor was strongest in the area. Individuals familiar with the neighborhood and the indigent people who frequent there said a homeless man was last seen squatting in the old building before it collapsed and had since gone missing.

Due to the precarious way in which the building had collapsed, the Department of Public Works was summoned to clear the debris with heavy equipment. As the debris was cleared, a man’s body became visible and was recovered.

The body of the deceased was later identified as 56-year-old Denley Joseph, also known as “Suto”. No foul play was apparent in his death.
