Small Fire Causes Monday Shutdown Of Waste Management’s St. Croix Transfer Station

News / Virgin Islands / June 29, 2015

ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority announced on  Sunday that due to a fire at the St. Croix transfer station, residents and waste haulers will not have access to the site on Monday.

According to the press release, smoke was reportedly coming from the transfer station after the close of business on Sunday afternoon. A smoldering fire was discovered in a green waste pile, and the VI Fire Service was called to extinguish the flames and continued to monitor  the site overnight.

While closed to the public on Monday, WMA employees will remove the impacted waste and clean the area. The facility is expected to reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Residents with household waste are being asked to transport their refuse to one of the public disposal sites at Cotton Valley, Mon Bijou, Concordia, or the Peter’s Rest Convenience Center.

Residents are also asked to reduce the amount waste being disposed by adopting reuse and recycling practices, and to flatten items such as cardboard boxes prior to disposal.
