ST. THOMAS — 40-year-old Derrick Lewis of Hospital Ground was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, after he was caught with over 300 grams of marijuana, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson has announced.
According to the press release, issued on Friday, on Wednesday at about 4:00 p.m., Lewis was observed loitering in the area of Prindsens Gade (Goat Street), standing in front of a building, displaying what appeared to be large amounts of a green, leafy substance in plastic bags atop a cardboard box and in bowls.
Lewis was stopped and questioned by officers who conducted a search, and discovered a clear plastic bag containing the leafy, green substance; another clear bag containing a leafy, brown substance; a pack of bamboo paper along with a lighter; and large amounts of cash in the pocket of his pants.
A further search of Lewis’ backpack revealed a large and unknown quantity of the green substance that later tested as marijuana, along with a scale, scissors and an undetermined amount of plastic bags. It was later determined that Lewis had in his possession a total of 379.2 grams (0.825lbs.) of marijuana.
Unable to make bail of $10,000, Lewis was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
