Fifth Annual St. Thomas-St. John District Parent Conference Announced

Education / News / Virgin Islands / August 7, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Department of Education Office of the Insular Superintendent, St. Thomas-St. John District will host its 5th Annual Parent Conference on Sunday, September 6 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Marriot Frenchman’s Reef Hotel here, according to a press release DOE issued on Wednesday.

This year’s conference themed, “Parents & Educators: Partners in Student Success” will be punctuated with a live debut performance of the School District’s new theme song by Virgin Islands international reggae artist, Pressure Busspipe.

The one-day event is free and open to all parents and guardians with students enrolled in public schools. The gathering will serve to educate attendees about the District’s vision, mission, goals and initiatives, as well as help parents learn the systems in place to support them and understand the role they are to play.

A line up of guest speakers and breakout sessions is also planned. Renowned motivational speaker and author Andres Lara, more widely known as “The Cuban Guy,” will share his inspirational ‘rags to riches’ story that chronicles his transformation from a 16-year-old homeless Cuban escapee into a millionaire by the age of 26. Breakout sessions will feature targeted conversations around topics relevant to parenting in the 21st Century, including Parent University, Internet safety, raising a bilingual child, gang awareness, and more. Local businesses and organizations will also be present to offer information about the services they can offer attendees and their families.

Complimentary shuttle service will be available from Havensight parking lot to Frenchman’s Reef Hotel every half hour from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on September 6, and from the hotel to the Havensight parking lot from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

For more information, contact Jerae Forde, director of school and community affairs, at (340) 775-2250 Ext. 8569.
