U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, August 14, 2015 – The Department of Tourism is pleased to congratulate Jonisha Aubain, winner of the 2015 Junior Tourism Commissioner competition, according to a press release DOT issued on Friday.
The Charlotte Amalie High School senior will join Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) State of the Industry Conference in Curacao this October to present against other students from around the region.
Aubain said her ultimate career goal is to be a marine biologist. She is an active member of the Amalian chapter of the National Honor Society and President of both the Book and Marine Biology Clubs. Jonisha recently placed first in the Laws of Life Essay contest and was the recipient of the Principal’s Award. She loves fishing, diving and embarking on other adventures in nature.
Nicholson-Doty congratulated Aubain on her exceptional performance in the competition, which required each student to deliver a prepared presentation on a tourism topic as well as respond to an impromptu question relating to tourism industry.
“I was very impressed by the students and am confident that Ms. Aubain will do a superb job of representing the USVI in the regional competition this fall,” the longstanding tourism commissioner said.
This year’s second participant was Tywreh Nelson, a senior at the St. Croix Educational Complex. In recognition of their outstanding performances, each received a Cardow watch and will have the opportunity for a paid internship within DOT.
The Junior Tourism Commissioner Competition was developed by the CTO to introduce Caribbean students to the fundamental role of tourism in the economic development of their countries.
