The National Hurricane Center has begun issuing advisories for the tropical depression four, an area of low pressure becoming more organized approximately 1,665 miles east of the Windward Islands, according to a press release the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency issued today.
At 11 a.m., the center of tropical depression four was located near Latitude 10.6 degrees north, Longitude 36.5 degrees west. The depression is moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour and this motion toward the west is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest later tonight or on Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today.
Currently, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
VITEMA says it will continue to monitor the system and provide updates. VITEMA Director Mona Barnes is also encouraging the public to closely monitor this system and to be ready in the event the system impacts the US Virgin Islands.
