ST. CROIX — The Bureau of Motor Vehicles recently extended its daily operations by one hour — now 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. — and Senator Kurt Vialet, who wrote Olive Lawrence, the Bureau’s director, prior to the recent announcement asking for the additional hours, publicly extended his gratitude.
In a letter dated July 6, 2015, Vialet said, “the question as to whether BMV could extend its hours has been asked of me many times by my constituents. They are often frustrated by the timely registration process and the fact that they are penalized at work when they are gone longer than their allotted one-hour launch period.”
Vialet also revealed his plan to propose legislation that would see BMV opening two Saturdays per fortnight following the government’s pay period, in an effort to save time and avoid workers from being reprimanded.
The senator also asked Lawrence in the letter some key questions before moving forward with the measure, including whether the Bureau would be able to sustain the extra cost; which employees would be responsible for manning the extra hours required; how much they would be compensated; and whether employees would be covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
However, in light of BMV’s move, Senator Vialet told The Consortium on Sunday that he’d forego the legislation, and said measures that become law are oftentimes initiatives departments and agencies could institute on their own accord.
“With what [Lawrence] has done and is planning on doing, I think [the legislation] is no longer necessary,” Vialet said.
