Another Drunk Driving Incident In St. Thomas

News / Virgin Islands / September 22, 2015

ST. THOMAS — Another man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after the vehicle was operating became involved in an auto collision, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced on Monday.

According to Jackson, Dysart Christopher, 29, of no specific address was charged on Sunday, September 20 in relation to the accident, which occurred on Nicholas Friday Drive.

Unable to make bail of $500, Christopher was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.

The arrest of Christopher follows another drunk driving incident that occurred here on the same day, when Gary E. Garten, 55, of Sapphire struck three women, leaving the victims head, back and leg injuries.

According to the police report, the women made the move to cross after acknowledging that the first driver, traveling eastward on the same roadway, stopped just before the speed bump allowing them to cross the street.

But the women — who had already crossed the eastbound lane and were in the westbound lane — were struck by a Nissan Frontier, whose driver had overtaken the vehicle that had stopped in front of him allowing the women to cross the street.

The victims were rushed to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital having sustained various non-life threatening injuries. Victim #1 sustained a contusion to the head, a broken front tooth and several abrasions about the body and face. Victim #2 sustained abrasions to the leg area and an injury to the back; while Victim #3 sustained an injury to the back.

All three victims were kept under observation at the medical facility and their condition at the current time remains unknown.
