ST. CROIX — A 29-year-old Estate Grove Place man was arrested and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm at 9:48 p.m. on Sunday while VIPD officers were pursuing an unrelated matter, Kevin Jackson, the force’s public information officer announced this afternoon.

According to Jackson, the suspect, Jamal Rivera, was taken into custody after police, investigating an unrelated matter in the vicinity of West Airport Road, observed a vehicle that left the main road and veered onto a dirt road that lead to a dead end. officers followed the vehicle.

While questioning Rivera, who voluntarily gave consent to search his vehicle, officers discovered several live rounds of ammunition. The officers then searched the immediate area and found an automatic rifle, according to Jackson.

Unable to make bail of $10,000, Rivera was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
