TORTOLA — The BVI will have to wait much longer before a new Commissioner of Police take up duties.
Robin Smith from the United Kingdom was appointed Commissioner of Police by Governor John Duncan and was expected to take up duties next month. However, the commissioner designate informed the Governor of his decision to withdraw from the post for personal and professional reasons.
According to a news release, the post will now be re-advertised and Acting Commissioner Alwin James will continue as head of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force until further notice. When Smith received the appointment, he said it was an enormous honor to be appointed Commissioner of Police and to lead the men and women of the RVIPF, added that it would have be the highlight of his 30 year police career.
Smith said he was looking forward to using his experience to “support his new colleagues and to working with the Governor, members of government, partners and stakeholders, and most of all the communities for whom they have a duty to serve and keep safe.”
The last Commissioner of Police was David Morris, also of the UK. Morris was heavily criticized by some police officers with some taking him to court on a number of matters, especially relating to the constitution within the force and the promotion exercise.
