ST. THOMAS — Students at the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School (BCB) on Friday, Nov. 20 donated $1,000 to the American Cancer Society from money raised at an October 30 fundraiser at the school, a Department of Education press release issued on Friday has revealed.
A check presentation was made to Lorraine Baa, Executive Director of the American Cancer Society in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
According to School Counselor Patricia Adams, who spearheaded the fundraising effort, students, faculty and staff paid a fee of $2 on Oct. 30 to attend school dressed in the signature pink Breast Cancer Awareness colors in order to raise the funds. This is the second year the school has fundraised for the American Cancer Society.
Ms. Baa said she was very moved by the generous donation.
“Today’s presentation was really touching. To have students who are not quite teens present a check to the American Cancer Society for a thousand dollars is absolutely phenomenal. It just shows you the power of youth, and once they make up their minds, they can do anything,” she said.
Ms. Baa also pointed out that it is important for students to be aware of cancer because “cancer does not discriminate,” she said, adding, “There are children younger than they are who are surviving cancer. This gift today was heartwarming. I am so touched and I am so proud of BCB.”
Ms. Adams also praised the school’s efforts. “The students and the faculty and staff supported the venture very well,” she said. “We were happy to be able to do that kind of community service because cancer can affect anyone. This is something that we would continue to do on a yearly basis. We are really happy that as a family at BCB we can contribute.”
Students assigned to BCB’s Teams E and H decorated the walls outside their classrooms with pink ribbons to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
