Delta To Serve Free Meals To Homeless As Part Of Local Sorority’s Annual Service Project

ST. CROIX — The St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will hold its annual “Feed the Homeless” Project from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 16 at the Christian “Shan” Vegetable Market in Christiansted, a press release the organization issued on Wednesday makes known.

According to the release, for over 15 years, the Sorority has alternated from Frederiksted to Christiansted each year to serve free meals to the homeless as part of its ongoing commitment to serve the St. Croix community, especially those who often go hungry. Meals include choices of chicken, fish, roast pork, with sides to include macaroni and cheese, rice, stuffing, vegetables and rolls and soft drink. This year’s goal is to serve 103 persons, in tribute to the 103 years that Delta Sigma Theta Inc. has selflessly served communities throughout our nation and the world.

“The Sorority’s Feed the Homeless project is about reaching out to the less fortunate and underserved in our community,” said St. Croix Alumnae Chapter President Sandra L. Setorie. “St. Croix Alumnae Chapter adopted this annual project because we identified that there is a continuous need to help those in need, who often go hungry or without a hot meal for many days. We take this initiative very seriously and we try to serve as many people as possible.”

This initiative is one of the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter’s signature projects and is an ongoing service component in commemoration of its annual Founders Day ceremonies. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 envisioned women. It now boasts a sisterhood of over 250,000 predominately Black college educated women committed to public service and with over 900 chapters worldwide.

Funding for the meals is provided each year by individual donations from chapter members. Chapter members also prepare and serve the meals.
