ST. CROIX — This afternoon Dr. Michelle Davis, Department of Health commissioner nominee and Deputy Commissioner Kimberly Jones visited the Queen Louise Home for Children, where they presented Dana Holtz, the facility’s director, with 25 mosquito nets for the orphanage’s residents, according to a press release DOH issued on Thursday afternoon.
According to the release, the nets can easily cover the baby cribs and the beds of the older residents. The DOH officials spoke with the director about the Zika Virus, Zika prevention and testing procedures for suspected cases.
“The Department of Health continues to work with the CDC and our HHS Regional Health Administrator to control this potential outbreak and protect the residents and visitors to the territory,” stated Ms. Jones.
DOH says that to date it has distributed approximately 3000 mosquito nets focusing their efforts on pregnant women in the territory. The department says it will be providing free flu and pneumonia shots on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the AARP office on St. Croix. DOH will also be distributing free mosquito repellent and information about the Zika virus.
And a training session will be conducted on St. Thomas at 1:00 p.m. at the Maternal and Child Healthcare Clinic on Friday as well. All healthcare providers are invited to attend the open training.
