ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority, in a press release issued on Thursday, said it was investigating the source of an apparent petroleum product on the surface of the waters off the WAPA fuel dock in Estate Richmond.

According to WAPA Chief Operating Officer Gregory Rhymer, Plant personnel noticed the petroleum sheen at around 12 noon today and have begun the process of determining its source, containing it and effecting a clean-up.

Local authorities including: VITEMA, DPNR and the V.I. Port Authority have been notified. And given the proximity of Seaborne Seaplane operations and the fuel dock facility, the airboat company has also been notified. The Coast Guard’s National Response Center was advised of the incident as well.

WAPA says updates will be provided once they become available.
