ST. JOHN — Expressing her appreciation for the various agencies that came together to ensure that timely transportation services are provided to the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged community on this island, Senate Vice President Janette Millin Young applauded the well-coordinated ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony she attended on Friday.
“Seizing the opportunity provided by the V.I. Housing Finance Authority through the Community Development Block Grant (C.D.B.G.) Program, the St. John Community Foundation stepped up and filled a need in their community. Through the C.B.D.G. funds, they were able to purchase a 2016 Ford Expedition all-wheel drive vehicle with a Bruno Valet chair that provides easy access for disabled individuals. This now allows them to traverse to areas where their van could not,” Mrs. Millin Young said.
The St. John Dial-A-Ride Transportation and Supportive Services Program is managed by the St. John Community Foundation, according to the release. Some of the services they provide include coordinating appointments and following up with other service providers for meal provision, health and substance abuse treatment or prevention, education, fair housing, counseling picking up medicine and groceries, bill interpreting and payment negotiating, service intake form assistance, home safety checklist and repair projects, as well as participating in and coordinating local health fairs. The organization also deliver supplies and provide shelter support services in times of disaster and recovery.
“The true spirit of community was clearly demonstrated by all who worked together to ensure that the daily needs of several residents are met. We must continue to provide the necessary resources to organizations like the St. John Dial-A-Ride who is working diligently to improve the quality of life for Virgin Islanders,” Mrs. Millin Young concluded.
