ST. CROIX — The American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands gladly announced via press release on Wednesday that their Fill the Boot campaign surpassed $10,000 in donations, which were given by the general public on Saturday, March 12, in St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. The donations raised are destined to help families affected by disasters and emergencies, according to the release.
“We are extremely grateful of the outpouring of support received by all of our collaborators, donors and the media who not only helped to raise awareness of this event but also motivated the community to show up and make their donation,” said Marla Matthew, Disaster Program manager for the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands. “We would also like to thank to all the 160 American Red Cross volunteers and collaborators that helped make this event a success in all three islands.”
Red Cross thanked Civil Air Patrol, V.I. Fire Service, V.I. Police Cadets, Firefighter Trainees, Retired Firefighters, Cub Scouts Pack 7227, The Junior Firefighters, V.I. Police Department, Youth Aviation Program, Ileana Infante & The Frenchman’s Reef Hotel, Sisters with Purpose, Red Cross Disaster Responders and other community groups and friends — all who helped in making the event a success.
And in other news, just last week alone, Red Cross assisted a multiple family home fire in St. Thomas where five families were affected. To help promote home fire preparedness in the community, the Red Cross St. Croix office will install smoke alarms in Mon Bijou on Saturday, March 19, 2016. For this event, the Red Cross calls on all of their volunteers to join and support this Home Fire Campaign installation, according to the release.
