Vandals Destroy Restroom Toilets In Canegata Ballpark Facility

Crime / News / Virgin Islands / April 5, 2016

ST. CROIX — The Commissioner of Sports, Parks and Recreation, Pedro Cruz, told The Consortium on Monday that vandals had destroyed restroom toilets located in the Canegata Ballpark facility in Gallows bay over the weekend.

On Tuesday morning, Mr. Cruz said such behavior was a disservice to members of the community, whose tax dollars are used to maintain public facilities. The commissioner also called on residents to report any information that may lead to the arrest of suspects.

“When I came into my office on Monday morning, my sports director approached me and showed me all these pictures,” Mr. Cruz said, referring to the pictures in the collage feature image of this story. “I would like to encourage the community to recognize that this is their facility, and it’s very hard to get funds to keep these facilities at standard.”

Mr. Cruz said it’s already a painstaking task to get funds to “rebuild, repair and maintain these facilities,” and if the public does not take care of them, “unfortunately, all we’ll have is criticism that government does not have the facilities to optimum standards.”

To help prevent such occurrences, Mr. Cruz suggested that Sports, Parks and Recreation enlist what he calls “rangers” who would visit the facilities in an effort to deter vandalism. And he again stressed the importance of community members reporting what they know to authorities.
