Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett said on Thursday that she’s encouraging Virgin Island students to write President Barack Obama, asking him to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands before he leaves office in 2017.
Students who elect to participate in the Congresswoman’s letter-writing initiative will be asked to write a one to three paragraph letter expressing why they believe Mr. Obama should visit the territory.
“The purpose of this initiative is to engage students in an exercise of civic duty, while encouraging them to express their thoughts and opinions through writing,” Ms. Plaskett said. “Throughout the year, I have made it a point to visit our schools and meet with our teachers and students. Our children are bright, energetic and have very unique ideas. We are hoping that the words of our bright young Virgin Islanders will add some persuasive fervor to our efforts in inviting President Obama to the territory.”
Ms. Plaskett’s “letter to the President Initiative” is open to all sixth, seventh and eight grade students in the territory, including students from the territory’s public, private and parochial schools. The initiative is also open to 10-13-year-old students who are home schooled.
The participation period will open May 9 and run through May 31, according to the release. During the participation period, outstanding letters will be posted on social media sites, and updates will be provided to followers and participants on the number of letters received. At the close of the participation period, the letters will all be compiled and forwarded to the White House.
The class with the most participation will be treated to a pizza party with Congresswoman Plaskett in their classroom at a date and time conducive to regular classroom instruction, according to the release.
