Vehicular Accident In St. John Leaves One Victim Dead; Another Hospitalized

Breaking News / News / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / June 30, 2016

ST. JOHN — A vehicular accident on this island Tuesday left one person dead and another hospitalized, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced via press release today. Police arrested a female suspect — a tourist — who was charged with negligent driving and one count of vehicular homicide.

The victim, a Caucasian female from Florida and lived in St. John for five years, according to Mr. Dratte. Police did not reveal her identity because next of kin had yet to be notified.

According to the release, on Tuesday at about 6:56 p.m., officers were dispatched to an auto collision involving a scooter and an SUV in the area of the Race Track Gas Station. Police did not give an explanation as to how the incident occurred; only that the SUV struck the scooter.

The victims were transported to the Myah Keating Smith Clinic for treatment, where the passenger succumbed to her injuries. Police did not reveal the identity of  the suspect.

Correction: June 30, 2016

A previous version of this story included information provided by the V.I.P.D. that incorrectly noted the victim’s age as 40. Police clarified that age to be the suspect’s; not the victim. The story has been updated to reflect the correct information.
