ST. THOMAS — Two passengers on board a 31-foot vessel were safely rescued late Monday night after the vessel capsized in the vicinity of Rupert Rock (East of the end of the WICO Dock), the West Indian Company, Ltd. (WICO) made known this afternoon.
Both rescued passengers were brought ashore to the WICO dock where they were examined by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and released, according to WICO. No one was injured.
“At 11:51 pm last night, WICO was notified by Yacht Haven Grande of a capsized vessel and two people stranded on Rupert Rock, one possibly with head injuries. Shortly thereafter, we were notified of the situation by 911 emergency services,” Joseph B. Boschulte, president and CEO of the WICO, said.
“Our security vessel WICO2 was immediately deployed on this rescue mission. Two (2) individuals were rescued and brought ashore on the WICO Dock, where EMS was on hand to render aid. Thankfully, no-one was injured and the two individuals were released after examination by EMS. I would like to acknowledge the WICO security team for their immediate action response. WICO continues to stand ready to respond and support the marine community in event of emergency,” he added.
Members of the Virgin Islands Police Department, Emergency Medical Services, Yacht Haven Grande, St. Thomas Rescue and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources were also on hand to assist with this emergency.
The vessel capsized after hitting one of the harbor navigational aids.
