Torrential rainfall and thunderstorms are impacting the US Virgin Islands and there is a potential for localized flooding, according to the US National Weather Service at Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency announced this morning.
At 6:43 a.m, satellite imagery detected strong thunderstorms developing over the coastal waters just off the east coasts of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and moving quickly westward. These thunderstorms are capable of producing torrential rainfall, gusty winds of up to around 30 miles per hour, frequent lightning and reduced visibilities. Urban and gut flooding is also possible with these passing thunderstorms. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with some of these thunderstorms and may cause localized flooding.
VITEMA and the US National Weather Service is advising the motoring community to proceed with caution and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Also, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this system. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
