Virgin Islands National Guard (V.I.N.G.) on Thursday announced that its units are conducting annual training at various sites across the territory during the months of July through September.
According to the release, the National Guard is positioned in communities to provide response support to local, state, and national emergencies as a domestic mission. For this reason, it is important for guardsmen to train and become familiar with the local environment. The release adds that V.I.N.G.’s ability to meet all contingencies at home and abroad requires that it too maintain capabilities and practice essential skills. This is achieved through monthly training assemblies (drills), annual training, planned exercises and community projects.
The Virgin Islands community should not be alarmed, the release goes on. During training, noise considerations are executed as the Guard is aware residents may be in the vicinity of on-base and off-base locations. In addition, motorists are asked to observe safety and road rules when they encounter a grouping of military vehicles on roadways. The convoy of large or wide vehicles may obstruct visibility, if you attempt to pass.
The release appears to be in response to resident complaints following an FBI-sponsored exercise that included simulations of homemade explosions at V.I.N.G.’s St. Croix base in Estate Bethlehem. Residents of Colquhoun (Mount Pleasant) said they were twice shaken by the explosions that had disoriented animals, the elderly and sent widespread panic throughout the community.
V.I.N.G. apologized in advance for any inconvenience its training events or activities may cause residents.
