ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp traveled out of the territory Thursday, Government House made known on Friday.
According to the release, the governor traveled to the South Florida area as part of a business trip focused on the racing and gaming industry. He was set to visit the Miami area to tour the Gulfstream Racetrack Park facility, according to Government House.
The release adds that Gulfstream Park is one of the nation’s premier thoroughbred racetracks offering year-round championship racing, and is considered a major attraction for South Florida visitors.
Established in 1939, the park has been one of the most important venues for horse racing in South Florida and the country, according to Government House. Some of the world’s top thoroughbred contenders pass through Gulfstream Park with their eye on Triple Crown glory.
In addition to thoroughbred racing, the park offers Vegas-style slot machines and an upscale poker room with over 20 live action tables, and is adjacent to The Village at Gulfstream Park where a wide variety of shops and restaurants are featured.
Mr. Mapp will return to the territory on Sunday. During his absence, Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter is the territory’s temporary chief executive.
