ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp, who nominated Renee Gumbs Carty, above, to serve as a judge of the Superior Court in April, spoke highly of Ms. Gumbs-Carty at her investiture ceremony at the Alexander A. Farrelly Justice Center on Thursday.
The master of ceremony was Treston Moore of Moore Dodson and Russel, PC, and the event was attended by family, friends and colleagues, according to Government House. Also on hand were some 31st Legislature senators, among them Tregenza Roach, Myron Jackson, Kenneth Gittens and Novelle Francis.
“Judge Gumbs Carty is a Virgin Islander by birth and has come through our public school system and our own home-grown university, UVI. She is an inspiration to all Virgin Islanders, but especially our young women,” Mr. Mapp said. He explained how he was inspired by Governor Juan Luis’s process in the nomination of a judge and that Ms. Gumbs Carty was an exemplary candidate to fairly judge cases during this time in the territory, when young people are faced with issues of drugs and violent crimes.
In her response, after receiving her gown and gavel, Judge Gumbs Carty said that she was truly humbled by the honor of her appointment.
“I will serve with honor and I will not let this community down,” she said. Ms. Gumbs Carty thanked those in attendance and reminded the audience that her success was in no small part to the support system that she had while growing up.
Judge Michael Dunston, presiding judge of the Superior Court, pointed out during the commission of office that it was a historic moment because for the first time in court’s history, female judges outnumber their male counterparts.
Judge Gumbs Carty holds an AA in business administration with a concentration in management, and a BA in accounting from the University of the Virgin Islands. She earned her juris doctorate from Texas Southern University-George Thurgood Marshall School of Law, according to Government House.
