D.O.E.’s Instructional Technology Division Rolls Out New Office 365 Student Email Service

Community Center / Education / News / Virgin Islands / September 23, 2016

ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Department of Education, Office of Instructional Technology, recently overhauled the Department’s online operating systems, which now offers all public school students in grades 1st-12th a new user account and email address on Office 365, one of the top online operating systems on the market today.

The Student email service represents an official means of communication between students and Department of Education staff. Staff will rely on the Student email account for official communications related to students’ courses (i.e. assignment reminders, class announcements, and other day-to-day notices). The Department of Education may also communicate with students regarding school closures, emergencies, and other official communications through the Student email service. It is important that students check email accounts on a regular basis.

The new system also gives students access to wireless internet connectivity, Goggle apps, access to the web filter, the ability to create helpdesk tickets and a host of other network services. Additionally, the Student email service gives teachers the ability to create virtual classrooms that students can have access to.

The technology overhaul is in line with the Department of Education’s focus on student achievement. “Whether your profession is in the classroom, the lunchroom or the boardroom, we must all join forces to ensure our students are learning and thriving,” Commissioner Sharon Ann McCollum, Ph.D., said to Department of Education employees in a written statement. “Let us make a renewed commitment to the achievement of all Virgin Islands’ students–this is what the Department of Education has been mandated to do. I believe that with our persistence and dedication, and with our hearts and hands united as one, we will attain our goals of producing well-prepared students to meet 21st Century demands, generating higher test scores, and developing tomorrow’s leaders to their fullest potential. When our students achieve, we all achieve.”

This new student email system will take effect on Monday, September 26, 2016.

For more information and to sign up for the FREE Student email service, students and parents should visit the Department of Education’s website, www.vide.vi and click the “FOR STUDENTS” tab.
