ST. CROIX — Ethelbert “Bert” Benjamin Jr., employed at the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency, has been arrested on a first degree rape charge, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced via press release this afternoon.
Mr. Benjamin, 56, was arrested on Thursday at about 9:15 a.m. following a report by a 20-year-old, who stated that she was raped by Mr. Benjamin.
Police say Mr. Benjamin was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing, but the force would not provide more information relative to where or how the incident might have occurred.
In 2012, Mr. Benjamin was among VITEMA employees recognized by the White House Communications Agency, for the outstanding manner in which they provided support to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden during one of his visits to St. Croix, according to a VITEMA press release. Mr. Benjamin is also a well-known figure in the community.
