ST. THOMAS — Following an announcement from Attorney General Claude Earl Walker that two sex offenders are being sought on St. Thomas for failure to update their registration, one of the men turned himself in to special agents at the Department of Justice Tuesday morning.
Darion Johnson, 41, surrendered without incident to the authorities, according to Sehkera Tyson, assistant director for the Bureau of Investigation at the Department of Justice. He was subsequently arrested on a single charge of failure to keep sexual offender registration current and his bail was set at $1,000. Unable to post bail, Johnson was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice-of-rights Wednesday.
Commenting on the matter, AG Walker said, “DOJ intends to enforce the registration requirements with rigidity because this involves protecting our women and children.” Meanwhile, the DOJ is still looking for Daniel Cove. Cove, 33, is Caucasian, is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds. He is bald and has blue eyes. His last known address is 2A Wintberg. Cove is considered a Tier 2 sexual offender and by law, he is required to register every six months for 25 years.

In 1997, the Virgin Islands enacted its first sex offender registration statute, and in 2006, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 was enacted by Congress. Title I of that Act is known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act or SORNA. This Act established a new baseline standard for states to track sex offenders, which required more unity and cooperation amongst jurisdictions in the registration and notification process.
