Public meetings will be held next week by the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority to provide an overview of an Integrated Resource Plan which, when adopted, will guide the public utility in planning the future of its power generation, WAPA made known via press release Friday.
The plan resulted from a study conducted by WAPA consultant, Black & Veatch, after two rounds of public meetings and sessions with community stakeholders, a process that began in 2015.
“At the upcoming meetings, WAPA and its consultant will present the findings of the study,” said Executive Director / CEO Julio A. Rhymer, Sr. WAPA also has meetings scheduled next week with stakeholders in the public and private sectors.
The public meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. each day as follows:
- Monday, October 24, 2016 — Charlotte Amalie High School Auditorium
- Tuesday, October 25, 2016 — Cleone Henrietta Creque Legislative Conference Room
- Wednesday, October 26, 2016 – Curriculum Center, St. Croix
Mr. Rhymer said the Integrated Resource Plan will serve as a compass for the Authority, not only to let us know that we are going in the right direction towards meeting our established goals but to make recommendations for alternative solutions.
“The IRP is part of a long-term plan to improve the local economy by lowering the cost of electricity. The plan seeks to reduce emissions by using clean and renewable fuels. We are at the same time working to ensure that our electricity comes from varied sources and that WAPA is not tied to one fuel source in the future,” he said.
