ST. CROIX — The VI Waste Management Authority informed St. Croix solid waste haulers and residents late Tuesday that the St. Croix transfer station will be closed on Wednesday due to a backlog of waste at the facility.
On Tuesday, employees of Sanitas Partners LLC, contractors for the St. Croix transfer station, staged a work stoppage, W.M.A. said. As a result, the authority was unable to process, bale and wrap all in-coming waste at the facility.
W.M.A. did not elaborate on the reason for the work stoppage, but the authority has had problems paying its contractors; a situation that prompted Governor Kenneth Mapp to seek funding for the authority.
Waste Management is asking residents to use existing bin sites for waste disposal and haulers are advised that the facility will not be accepting incoming waste on Wednesday. Additional updates on the reopening of the facility will be provided following discussions with Sanitas Partners, LLC, according to the release.
The authority says it’s working to resolve the situation as swiftly as possible. For more information, contact the office of communications management at 340-715-9145 or email [email protected].
