ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) will temporarily close the commuter parking lot at the Urman V. Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook to begin construction of a two-level parking garage, VIPA Executive Director Carlton Dowe announced on Tuesday.
The Port Authority will provide paid commuter parking beginning Monday, November 14 at Parcel C Estate Nazareth, No. 1 Red Hook Quarter, located adjacent to the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School field, according to the release.
Parking rates at the temporary lot will be $1 per hour or $6 per day. Paid shuttle service to the ferry terminal will be available at a cost of $1 per trip. The UVF Terminal and barge ramp will remain open and fully operational during the construction of the parking garage. Commuter parking will not be allowed at the UVF Terminal during the construction, which is expected to be completed by Nov. 2017.
The UVF Terminal is one of the busiest seaports in the US Virgin Islands, according to V.I.P.A. The new two-level parking garage (see rendering here) will provide much needed additional parking spaces to alleviate some of the parking issues at the port. VIPA is also adding more parking for physically challenged drivers and improving drainage and utilities.
Mr. Dowe apologized for any inconveniences caused, and asked for the public’s patience as the Port Authority works to improve its port facilities. He also asked the public to exercise caution when traversing near the construction site.
