ST. THOMAS — Department of Human Services Commissioner-Designee Dr. Anita Roberts received notification from the Office of Grants Management Division of Mandatory Grants in Washington D.C., that it will be receiving $2,731,220 for the Children and Families Program, a press release D.H.S. issued recently has made known.
“This is great news for our department,” Ms. Roberts said. “As a ‘Discretionary’ grant, it is never guaranteed that you will be selected to receive the grant. The application goes through a very competitive process.”
Child Care Development Funds provide child care services for low-income family members who work, train for work, attend school, or whose children receive (or need to receive) protective services, according to the release.
“I am elated that many parents will not lose services for their children and may continue receiving assistance without disruption,” Ms. Roberts added. “Times are tough both in the private and public sectors of our community. Knowing that our children will be taken care of while their parents work or go to school helps alleviate some stress.”
Ms. Roberts said that $955,927 of the allotted amount has been received and the balance will be transmitted later in the fiscal year.
