America has chosen Donald Trump as its 45th president; a stunning reality that has left tens of millions in shock, and millions more jubilant, as they witnessed their candidate’s improbable bid went from an afterthought to a juggernaut that has defeated the well-oiled political machine of one of the world’s most known politicians, Hillary Clinton.
The Associated Press, The New York Times, CNN and Fox News moments ago called the race in Mr. Trump’s favor. Mrs. Clinton has also called Mr. Trump and conceded the election, according to NBC News. The race was first called by The Associated Press.
The win has yet to set in for many, but there were warning signs all along that Mr. Trump — though given a slim chance of winning by pollsters — could have mounted, as he did, a major upset and win the race.
He carried Ohio, North Carolina and Florida. And Mr. Trump also carried Wisconsin, a state that Mrs. Clinton was so confident that she would win, they hardly campaigned there.
“I just received a call from Secretary Clinton, she congratulated us — it’s about us — on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign,” Mr. Trump said during his victory speech. “The president-elect said Mrs. Clinton had worked very long and hard, adding that the nation owes her a major debt of gratitude.
“Now it’s time to bind the wounds of division; we have to get together. To all Republicans, Democrats and Independents, I say it’s time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me,” Mr. Trump said. “For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help, so that we can work together and unify our great country.
“As I’ve said from the beginning, ours was not a campaign, but rather an incredible and great movement made up of millions of hard-working men and women who love their country and who want a brighter future for themselves and their family.”
The Republicans also won down the ballot, and have retain control of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The sweep gives Mr. Trump a mandate to carry out his agenda.
Mr. Trump’s coalition, which included an immovable core of white working class voters, were from the onset more excited about voting for their candidate than Hillary Clinton’s base. They came out to vote for their candidate by the millions, turning pollsters, including those of major media outlets in the U.S., on their heads, defying every poll that projected Mrs. Clinton’s chance of winning the presidency, some by as much as 84 percent to 16 percent.
Even before the race was called, mainstream media outlets, as well as pundits, were weighing what had went wrong. Some blamed FBI Director James Comey’s eleventh hour email bombshell that turned out to be nothing serious. But some from the mainstream media blamed themselves, and their apparent disconnect with rural America, whose residents have not been pleased with the direction in which the country was going, including the legalization of gay marriage and other liberal agendas.
Mr. Trump didn’t just run against Democrats, he also rebelled against the establishment his own party, many of whom never supported him. And even those who did, many did so halfheartedly. Mr. Trump also spent a lot of his own money, which he said would keep him out of the hands of special interests. Pundits are saying tonight that that was also part of Mr. Trump’s appeal, as well as his tell-it-like-it-is persona.
