Site News: Consortium Was Down For An Hour Due To Issue At Hosting Company

Site News / Virgin Islands / November 16, 2016

The Virgin Islands Consortium experienced about an hour of downtime this morning. Users who tried to visit the site were greeted with a blank page that read, “503 Service Unavailable”.

The problem was caused by The Consortium’s hosting company, after it experienced a company-wide error with its servers, which caused thousands of sites to go offline.

The issue was patched and all sites — including ours — started coming back online just before 8:00 a.m. The issue rarely occurs, the hosting company said.

In other site news, The Consortium has seen exponential user growth this year, and is ranked by Alexa the most visited news site in the Virgin Islands by far. The site’s Facebook page, an important platform for the company, has grown to over 59,000 followers, well ahead of the company’s year-end projection of 60,000 followers.

“The downtime was unfortunate, but that’s a consequence of being online; things do happen,” said Ernice Gilbert, The Consortium’s founding editor. “We will continue looking at other hosting options, including private servers, as we continue to grow.”
