St. Croix Dolphins Swimmers Place Well At NCAP Invitational

Community Center / News / Sports / December 15, 2016

After what was described as a fantastic weekend in Puerto Rico at the 2016 Puerto Rico Short Course Championships, where St. Croix Dolphins teammates Matthew Mays and Webster Bozzo battled it out to claim title to several V.I. records, they returned to the competition pool this past weekend at the University of Maryland for the 2016 Nation’s Capital Invitational, the St. Croix Dolphins made known via press release Wednesday.

Thirty teams and over 1600 swimmers raced during the 4-day holiday invitational (December 8-11), which all swimmers must qualify to compete in, making it a very fast swim meet. The boys were there to improve their short course yards times since they mostly swim meters year-round and colleges look at yard times when recruiting for their teams. Mr. Mays and Mr. Bozzo both competed in 5 individual events in the Open Age Category throughout the weekend.

Mr. Mays, who is a senior at the St. Croix Good Hope Country Day School, placed 10th in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.22, 12th in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.56, 9th in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 50.25, and 7th in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.69. Mr. Mays raced a total of 9 times in his 5 events. He qualified for finals in 4 out of his 5 events.

Mr. Bozzo, who is a Junior at the St. Croix Good Hope Country Day School, swam the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.46; 50 yard freestyle in a time of 22.07; 100 yard backstroke in a time of 52.61; 200 yard backstroke in a time of 1:56.78; and 100 yard freestyle in a time of 48.24.

“It was great to take these 2 boys to this elite meet. They push each other hard in practice every day and are fierce competitors, but also great friends who look out for one another in and out of the pool,” said Dolphins Head Coach Brian Brady.

They will be matched up again at the Dolphins 13th Annual Sea Swim on Sunday January 8, along with members of Harvard University Women’s Swim Team and Montclair State University Swim Team, who will be on island training at the Dolphins pool with teams from Puerto Rico, other members of the Dolphins team and many others, according to the release.

The one-mile race is open to the public with prizes for different age groups. Registration information is available on the Dolphins website here, or by calling the pool 340-719-SWIM (7946).
