ST. CROIX — Temisha Libert, known in the Calypso world as Caribbean Queen, breezed to victory during this year’s Calypso Monarch competition in St. Croix on Thursday, taking with her $6,500 and the bragging rights of winning her fourth straight competition.
The win solidified Caribbean Queen as a force to be reckoned with, and a Calypsonian who will not be easily dethroned. At this year’s competition, held at the Festival Village in Frederiksted, Ms. Libert faced five opponents, all of whom sang on various topics, yet none was able to match her lyrics, clarity and vocals.
Her first song touched on multiple issues affecting the community, and the government’s seeming inability to lift its people out of economic gloom. Her second song, titled “Never Say Never”, sought to remind listeners that anything is possible.
“God is so good. I would have never imagined being able to win this title after going through so much,” Ms. Libert told this publication following her victory. “But my family and friends have been so supportive, and of course it’s a honor to be able to stand in the Village on the festival stage and to be crowned as your Crucian Christmas Festival Calypso Monarch.”
Asked what determines her choice of lyrics for her performances, Ms. Libert credited her writer, Carol Hodge, who lives in New York — and who she deemed a very tough critic — for her success.
She will be defending her crown in St. Thomas during the Carnival season in April, and in Atlanta later in the year.
