ST. CROIX — The scenes around the world — and especially in U.S. cities where, collectively, millions gathered from Chicago to the nation’s capital in protest of the inauguration of President Donald Trump — were stunning.
The Women’s March and sister marches globally were a huge success in galvanizing people from all walks of life against the Trump administration, mainly triggered by Mr. Trump, whose tone against women, the Muslim religion and other issues during the campaign in 2016 and even as president-elect, has coalesced a wide coalition against him — one day after his inauguration.
The main march took place in Washington with an estimated crowd of about 500,000 people, according to reports from U.S. media outlets. A press release issued by event organizers says the march sought to reaffirm the core values of freedom and democracy for all, at a time when many fear their voices will be lost, especially in relation to the rights of women, immigrants, workers, reproduction and freedom of choice, the LGBTQIA community, the environment, rights for all races and religious freedom.
Below, scenes from the St. Croix event, which began at Time Square in Christiansted Saturday morning and ended with speeches and performances at the bandstand at Fort Christianvaern.
