Gunman Fires Shots At Victim Who Escaped Robbery Attempt

Crime / News / Virgin Islands / February 6, 2017

ST. THOMAS — A man who escaped a gunpoint robbery attempt told police that the suspect fired shots in his direction that wound up damaging his vehicle, V.I.P.D. Media Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced Saturday.

Ms. Freeman said that at roughly 8:36 p.m. on Friday, officers traveled to the area of the Western Cemetery after a citizen reported an attempted robbery, to investigate the matter.

The investigation units traveled to the area of Petrus Gas where they made contact with the victim, who explained that while transporting an individual in the area of Altona and Welgunst, he stopped his vehicle and was approached by a gunman who pointed a firearm to his head and demanded his money, Ms. Freeman said.

The victim said he drove southward onto Veterans Drive and was able to escape the mugger, according to Ms. Freeman. The victim also told police that he heard shots fired while driving away, which caused damage to his vehicle. The victim concluded by stating that once he felt safe, he was able to contact the 911 emergency call center for assistance.

The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact the force at (340) 774-2211, or the Criminal Investigation Bureau at (340) 714-9801. You can also contact Crime Stoppers here, or call them at 1 (800) 222-8477, as well as 911.
