Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority Executive Director Julio A. Rhymer, Sr. on Monday advised the public that after July 28, 2017, utility payments can no longer be made at Scotiabank branches in the Virgin Islands.
“It is unfortunate that we have arrived at this decision, but a formal notification from officials at Scotiabank left WAPA with few choices. The bank advised us that beginning on August 15, 2017, it would only accept utility payments from Scotiabank account holders, and for those customers, the processing fee would be increased by 100 percent. The Authority found this increase in cost and customer exclusivity unacceptable, therefore, the Authority has decided to end this contractual relationship,” Mr. Rhymer said.
For those customers, Mr. Rhymer noted, WAPA provides a number of payment options that can be utilized. The options range from making an on-line payment on WAPA’s web site, utilizing the recently deployed self-service payment kiosks on St. Thomas and St. Croix, as well as making payments at other local bank branches or at WAPA customers service locations on all three islands.
Mr. Rhymer advised Scotiabank in writing on Friday that “regrettably, we do not find it feasible to continue bill payment services with the bank under the conditions that you have advised.” He reminded WAPA customers that July 28, 2017 will be the last day WAPA payments can be made Scotiabank branches in the Virgin Islands.
