ST. CROIX — A man who police say assaulted his girlfriend on Monday was apprehended by officers on Tuesday, V.I.P.D. Pubic Information Officer Glen Dratte announced this morning. The incident occurred around the 3:00 p.m. hour in Peter’s Rest.
According to Mr. Dratte, on Tuesday at approximately 12:09 a.m., 27-year-old Zayvon Acoy was arrested after his 17-year-old minor girlfriend and her mother reported that Mr. Acoy strangled and physically assaulted her. Mr. Acoy also took personal electronic items and cash from the victim’s bedroom before he fled the area, Mr. Dratte said.
The victim, who was interviewed by police along with her mother, stated that she got into an argument with her boyfriend over her cellphone. She said Mr. Acoy then began choking her and physically assaulted her before fleeing the area, according to Mr. Dratte.
The victim was taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital by private vehicle, where she was admitted for treatment, according to Mr. Dratte.
Mr. Acoy was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree unlawful sexual contact, simple assault and battery, disturbing the peace by fighting and petit larceny.
In according with the territory’s domestic violence laws, Mr. Acoy was not given an opportunity to post bail, and was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advisement hearing.
