USVI Diaspora In New York Invited To Attend Benefit Concert At Jay Z’s 40/40 Club For Hurricane Relief

Community Center / Entertainment / Hurricane Recovery / October 17, 2017

Virgin Islanders living in New York, as well as the wider New York public, have been invited to mingle, nosh and enjoy music from Virgin Islands jazz artists and others to raise funds in support of hurricane relief efforts, the Virgin Islands Bar Association announced Monday.

The jazz concert, to be held at Jay Z’s 40/40 Club tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., will include performances from trombonist Reginald Cyntje and saxophonist Ron Blake —  both Virgin Islanders — keyboardist Chuk Fowler and his trio, bassist Endea Owens, drummer Orion Turre, pianist Benito Gonzalez, bassist Paul West, and more. The club is located at 6 West 25th Street, near Broadway Manhattan.

This latest effort is one of many by Virgin Islands diaspora, who have been touched by the havoc Hurricanes Irma and Maria wreaked on the U.S. territory.

Proceeds of the event, titled “America Cares — Virgin Islands Hurricane Relief'”, will support the St. Croix Foundation’s coordinating relief efforts for the entire territory, the Bar said. Tickets are $25, are tax-deductible, and can be purchased here.

The concert was organized by Trudy Fenster, president of the Virgin Islands Bar Association, along with New York friends Stephanie Nazalima Gittens-Durham, Sehu and Paulette Jeppe, Celeste Morris and St. Croix native Cherise Creque Quain.

The organizers look forward to welcoming all seeking to have a great time while making a difference, the release says. Those seeking to give online can do so here. Be sure to include America Cares-VI in the memo line.

For more information about this fundraising event and other efforts to assist overall, contact Ms. Fenster at 340-201-3091 or at [email protected].
