U.S. Virgin Islanders affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria now have until January 8, 2018 to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The registration deadline has been extended for individuals and families affected by the hurricanes to apply for grants for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. FEMA encourages every one affected by the hurricanes to register for assistance.
Survivors with connectivity may register at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. Individuals who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY should call 800-462-7585 directly. Those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) may call 800-621-3362. These toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (local time) seven days a week. Operators are standing by to assist survivors in multiple languages.
Additionally, Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) offer survivors a place to register for disaster assistance in person, especially residents who still have connectivity challenges. Representatives from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to answer questions and provide information on the types of federal help available to homeowners, renters and business owners throughout the islands who have experienced damages from the hurricanes.
