Governor Mapp has granted administrative leave to nonessential government employees for the holidays, according to a Government House release.
On St. Croix, employees have been granted leave on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 to celebrate the Crucian Christmas Festival, and leave has been authorized for employees territory-wide on Friday, January 5, 2018 in observance of the Three King’s Day holiday and to allow for participation in the Festival parade.
The people of the territory are well deserving of time off after experiencing two Category 5 hurricanes, Mr. Mapp said. He also encouraged relief and recovery personnel to participate in the Virgin Islands’ holiday activities.
“The St. Croix Crucian Christmas Festival will provide a boost to our economy and help to promote an understanding and appreciation of our culture,” the governor wrote. “It will also bring much needed relief of stress to the residents of our territory and it will also be a time to relax and recover.”
Christmas Day (December 25), Christmas Second Day (December 26) and New Year’s Day (January 1) are legal holidays in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which fall on weekdays this season, hence all government offices will be closed.
