Storms Not Enough To Stop 13th Annual Water Island Music Festival

News / Virgin Islands / January 19, 2018

WATER ISLAND — This year’s 13th Annual Water Island Music Festival happens on Saturday, even after the island — like its bigger sisters — was ravaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. This year’s event, being held at the Prior-Jollek Hall at 7:30 p.m., is being hosted by The Forum, a 501c3 non-profit organization that has presented 71 programs in 21 seasons, 16 film festivals, 26 Met Opera Live in HD and 4 London National Theatre Live in HD, according to its website.

On stage this year will be the beautiful artistry and masterful skills of piano virtuoso Julian Gargiulo and pianist Maria Yefimova, soprano Roza Bulat and the special participation by local soprano sensation Laura Strickling, according to a recently issued release. Eventgoers will also witness the award-winning performance of Nathan Meltzer, the winning violinist of the “Getting to Carnegie” Competition. It’s a one night only breathtaking musical affair, says the release.

The 2018 festival is a special fundraiser to benefit local charities, particularly involved in hurricane recovery efforts. There are several ways eventgoers will be able to help. They can participate in a silent auction and win great prizes. At the end of the concert, there will be a traditional hat collection accompanied by a world-class performance from one of the artists. When you give to the hat, you’ll be helping local charities and Virgin Islanders affected by the recent hurricanes, according to the release.

Tickets are priced at $25, with a special $10 rate for teachers, while students get in free of charge. The tickets are on sale at the Medicine Shoppe (Havensight), Frenchtown Deli, Chelsea Drugstore (Red Hook) and Antilles School administration office. You can also purchase the tickets online here.

Small meals, wine, water, tapas and dessert from Amalia Café will be served starting one hour before and during intermission at the event.
