Scotiabank Donates $15,000 To UVI, Bringing Bank’s Total Contribution Since 1986 To $346,500

ST. THOMAS — Scotiabank has donated a total of 15,000 to the University of the Virgin Islands as part of its annual commitment to support students in the Virgin Islands community, the bank announced Friday. The formal presentation of the donation took place on December 19.

The UVI Scotiabank Scholarship Fund has supported students who attend the University with a total of $346,500 since the initial gift in 1986.

“Scotiabank understands the importance of investing in the education and well-being of our young people. We proudly work with the University of the Virgin Islands in providing unique opportunities for today’s youth who will become community leaders of tomorrow,” said Christine N. Lee, marketing officer at Scotiabank USVI.

This year’s recipients are Jordan Brodhurst, a senior on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, and Keyan Francis who attends the St. Thomas Campus, and will graduate in 2019. Brodhurst majors in business administration with a focus on finance, while Francis majors in accounting.

“We value this long standing partnership between Scotiabank and UVI,” said Dr. David Hall, UVI president. “Their commitment to higher education and the youth of the territory is a shining example of the jewel we have in this company and its administrators. We thank them for their vision and for investing in student education at UVI.”

While $10,000 went to this year’s recipients, Scotiabank donated an additional $5,000 to support the university’s residential Summer Bridge program, which helps entering UVI students test out of developmental courses, so that they can complete their degrees on time without spending the first semester taking non-credit-bearing courses, according to the release.
